Backyard Birdies recently conducted an interview with PSA player and BB Ambassador Matthew Hopkin.
Firstly, congratulations on making the NSW Open. This is your second final for the year and you look to be improving as the year progresses.
Q: Do you feel a title is within your grasp?
A: Yes, I do feel it's within my grasp, I just need to change a few things with my training schedule.
You recently dislocated your shoulder during a quarterfinal match in Coffs Harbour. Most players would of conceded the match, but you showed a great deal of heart to get back on court to continue the match.
Q: Could you tell us a bit about that game?
A: Yes, I dislocated my shoulder in coffs unfortunately. Due to opponent inflicted injury. I would have been awarded the match if I couldnt play on. I didn't feel right about winning a match on an accidental bump. Tried to play on but found it difficult with the pain/mental side of things knowing I couldnt really use my right arm properly.
This year you and your wife have taken a leap of faith and purchased your very first house.
Q: How have you been finding the squash, work, life balance?
A: Yes, we have bought a house, exciting and stressful. Over the past say 6 months on average I've probably only hit/trained once a week. So the squash/work/life balance has been more work and life balance. After NSW Open I'm excited and keen to get squash back into that balance.
Q: What tournaments and plans do you have till the end of the year?
A: Tournaments for the rest of year will be Gold Coast Open, which is a 10k event, Cairns and then finally the Australian Open in Darwin which is also a 10k event. I will look at training alot more then I have been to hopefully do one better then my last tournament.
Q: Is there anything else you'd like to say?
A: Just want to say thanks to my wife, Sponsors and my employer. Working a full week then playing tournaments on weekends takes away time with the wife, so really appreciate her support. My sponors Dunlop and Backyardbirdies for there continued support through thick and thin having them is another support base and having the best clothing and equiptment available is amazing. And my employer 'Kemp Lifts', for allowing me take the time off to play these tournaments when needed, very much appreciated.
